What We Believe

Faith handed down, alive today.

We are part of the Church of the Brethren, a believers' church that has sought since 1708 to follow Jesus in everyday life.

One God

One God eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; II Corinthians 13:14

The Scriptures

The Bible is God's inspired Word, and the New Testament is our rule of faith and practice.

II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:21

Salvation in Christ

Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, who died and rose again for us.

John 14:6; Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 10:9

Believer's Baptism

Baptism is for those who choose to follow Christ, by trine immersion in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 6:3-4

Love Feast & Communion

Following Jesus' example, we share feet washing, a fellowship meal, and the bread and cup.

John 13:1-17; I Corinthians 11:23-26

Anointing & Prayer

We pray for and anoint the sick for healing of body, mind, and spirit.

James 5:14-16

Christ's Return

Jesus is coming again, and we live in that living hope.

I Thessalonians 4:13-18; Acts 1:11

Our History

Rooted in these mountains since 1890.

Before the church was built, worship was held in the Oronoco log school house, with preachers riding in from Stuarts Draft and the Valley of Virginia. Mr. Spottswood Dandridge Gilbert had the original church built by carpenter Tip Humphrey; the lumber was hauled in 1889 and the building was finished around 1890.

Oronoco began as a mission point of the Mt. Vernon Church of Stuarts Draft. Elder Robert M. Figgers walked from Buena Vista to preach, moved to Oronoco in 1909, and served as pastor for more than 40 years. The church was organized as a congregation in 1919.

Our first Homecoming was held on July 4, 1925. Ever since, Homecoming has been the third Sunday in June. Pastor E. Arnold Bradley was licensed in 1988 and ordained in 1991.
